日本語でもメンターと言いますね。正しいかはわかりませんが、個人的に、mentalと同語源なのではないかと思ったり。よき助言者というと、相手にとっては、「心の」拠り所のような存在ですし。

mentorの語源
mid 18th century: via French and Latin from Greek Mentōr, the name of the adviser of the young Telemachus in Homer's Odyssey
18世紀半ば、ギリシャ語のMentōr（ホメロスの「オデュッセイア」に登場する若きテレマコスの助言者の名前）からフランス語とラテン語を経て、現在に至っている。
