完全に失敗する、(船などが)沈没する
フランス語のfondre(溶かす、溶ける)に由来しています。チーズフォンデュ(fondue)のfonaueは、fondreの過去分詞形です。つまり、「何かが全て溶けて、なくなってしまう」ことから「大失敗する」という意味になったと考えられます。
