Middle English chivere, perhaps an alteration of dialect chavele ‘to chatter’, from Old English ceafl ‘jaw’
中世英語のchivereは、おそらく方言のchavele「おしゃべりする」が変化したもので、古英語のceafl「あご」に由来する。
