relishの語源
mid 16th century: alteration of obsolete reles, from Old French reles ‘remainder’, from relaisser ‘to release’. The early noun sense was ‘odour, taste’ giving rise to ‘appetizing flavour, piquant taste’ (late 16th century), and hence relish (sense 2 of the noun) (late 18th century)
16世紀半ば、古フランス語の reles「余り」、relaisser「放つ」から、古語の reles が変化したもの。初期の名詞の意味は「におい、味」であり、「食欲をそそる味、ぴりっとする味」（16世紀後半）、したがって「relish（名詞の意味2）」（18世紀後半）を生んだ。
