farmの語源
Middle English: from Old French ferme, from medieval Latin firma ‘fixed payment’, from Latin firmare ‘fix, settle’ (in medieval Latin ‘contract for’), from firmus ‘constant, firm’; compare with firm. The noun originally denoted a fixed annual amount payable as rent or tax; this is reflected in farm (sense 2 of the verb), which later gave rise to farm out meaning ‘to subcontract’. The noun came to denote a lease, and, in the early 16th century, land leased for farming. The verb sense ‘grow crops or keep livestock’ dates from the early 19th century
中世英語：古フランス語のfermeから、中世ラテン語のfirmare「固定、解決」（中世ラテン語の「契約」）から、firmus「一定、堅固な」；と比較。この名詞はもともと、家賃や税金として支払うべき一定の年額を表していました。このことは、farm（動詞の意味2）に反映されており、後に「下請けに出す」という意味の farm out が生まれました。この名詞は借用を表すようになり、16 世紀初頭には農業のために貸与された土地を表すようになった。動詞の「作物を育てる、家畜を飼う」という意味は、19世紀初頭に生まれたものである。
